Background of the Study
Electronic resource integration in academic libraries is crucial for creating a seamless user experience (UX). At the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, libraries have increasingly focused on integrating diverse electronic resources—such as e-books, academic journals, and multimedia databases—to support user research and learning. By merging these resources into a unified digital platform, the institution aims to reduce access barriers and facilitate efficient information retrieval (Okafor, 2023). Effective integration enhances navigation, minimizes search time, and increases the overall satisfaction of library users. The continuous improvement of user interfaces, driven by constant technological advancements, is an essential strategy for modernizing library services. However, integrating multiple resources presents challenges, including compatibility issues between legacy systems and new platforms, discrepancies in metadata standards, and limited user training on integrated tools (Adebayo, 2024). This study focuses on assessing the user experience resulting from electronic resource integration in a critical academic environment, evaluating the impact on search efficiency, resource discoverability, and user satisfaction to identify best practices for system optimization (Udo, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite significant investments in integrating electronic resources, users of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources’ library encounter challenges affecting their overall experience. Inconsistent interfaces, broken links between legacy and current systems, and inadequate user support contribute to difficulties in efficiently accessing information (Okafor, 2023). These issues hinder the potential benefits of a fully integrated digital platform, leading to user frustration and decreased resource utilization. The study aims to pinpoint the operational gaps and technical issues that compromise UX, thereby highlighting the need for systematic improvements in resource integration and user support mechanisms (Adebayo, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the impact of electronic resource integration on library UX.
To identify technical and operational challenges in integration.
To recommend enhancements for a more seamless user interface.
Research Questions:
How does resource integration affect user experience?
What technical challenges impede seamless integration?
What improvements are needed to optimize UX?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the influence of electronic resource integration on library user experience, providing critical insights that inform system improvements. Optimizing integration not only boosts resource accessibility and user satisfaction but also enhances academic research efficiency. The findings will benefit IT administrators and library professionals in developing more effective digital environments (Udo, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The research is confined to evaluating electronic resource integration at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources library and does not include offline systems or other campus services.
Definitions of Terms:
Electronic Resource Integration: The consolidation of multiple digital materials into a single accessible platform.
User Experience (UX): The overall ease and satisfaction with system interaction.
Metadata Standards: Guidelines for organizing digital resource information.
